LIPA Clean Energy Initiative Report for 2004

On April 18, 2005, the Long Island Power Authority released its Clean Energy Initiative Draft Annual Report for 2004. The report was released at the start of the week of Earth Day (April 22) to call attention to the environmental benefits of the public power authority's conservation, energy efficiency, and load reduction programs.

According to LIPA, Long Island's peak electricity demand has been reduced by 322 megawatts as a result of their Clean Energy Initiative. This is almost as much electricity as is delvered by the new Cross-Sound Cable, or as would be produced by construction of a new baseload power plant.

LIPA calculates that their effort to promote conservation and energy efficiency have prevented the release of approximately 5000 tons of sulfur dioxide, 1,900 tons of nitrogen oxides, and 1.3 million tons of carbon dioxide into the air. That amount of CO2 is approximately equal to taking 42,544 cars off the road for the six years that the Clean Energy Initiave has been in effect.

LIPA also dedicated the 500th residential solor photovoltaic (PV) roof to be installed under their rebate program. Homeowners can get a rebate from LIPA of $3.75 per watt for the installation of PV systems. LIPA also announced a new rebate program to make PV systems more attractive for municipalities, schools, and not-for-profit organizations. Municipalities now receive a $4.75 per watt rebate for the installation of PV systems.
